Please Respond to the informal 2007 BVFC Survey!
This is just an informal way for us to find out more about your experience with the BVFC 2007 season. Please use the “comments” section to tell us what you liked best and least about the season. This will help give us an overall feeling for what we should definitely keep doing, and what we might most want to change or improve for next year? We look forward to your responses!
Thanks,
The BVFC Board

Our team played with as few as 6 players in one game, and played other games with only 7 or 8 players. I know this was true for other teams as well. I think each team needs at least 3 more players next season. That will mean less playing time for teams whose players show up, but a few extra subs wouldn’t hurt in my opinion. It’s more fun playing less minutes than playing down 2 or 3 players in my opinion. See you guys at Starr Garden over the weekend!

maybe– looking into the extra cost of having refs involved? there was talk of having a mid season captains meeting. this could be used to have a second draft to replace players that are out and not returning? i also heard a great idea—for the main draft– each dude has an availability rating based on what amount of games they can make— and a rating from the captain–of that team– with the % of games the player made last season (if they are a returning player–most are)
The socialist in me wants everyone to come out and play. However, over the past four or five seasons it seems that we see more and more new faces. This is generally good, except that it has been accompanied by more and more of a lack of commitment. For ten months out of the year, we are able to get a core group to play pick-up, but then we can’t get people to come to regular scheduled games. I understand people have other commitments, but it can f*&% up a season for some teams. It seems that every season there are one or two teams who can barely compete because they can never field a full squad. I don’t really know the answer, as these people pay their money and then don’t show up.
On the ref issue, I’d like to see it more organized. Maybe at the draft, have people sign up to referee, and then have the refs sign up for each game on the schedule before the season starts.
Also, I had a hand ball last saturday at starr garden right in front of the goal. I’m glad that no one has defamed me on the blog!!!!!
hellow there
I play in a belgian soccer team and our team is called: Buena Vista Futbol Club !
Here’s my two Euro’s…
Re. the problem of availability / squad numbers. A lot of games were badly affected by insufficient numbers of players. All it took was for two or three people to be unavailable, add in an injury or two - both are inevitable - and you’re screwed. The only solution I see is for bigger squads to be allowed AND guest players to be allowed for all games EXCEPT the playoffs. Some may cry that it dilutes the competition, however it is less of a dilution than playing against a team of 7 or 8 ‘official’ players.
As far as refereeing is concerned there is unfortunately only one solution and that is to buck up or put up - if you want someone to make a commitment to refereeing then you have to pay them. I think the going rate for a qualified ref is $50 per game. Otherwise we will be in the same position we have been in all the previous years; relying on the kindness of volunteers. It is unreasonable to ask a volunteer to sign up to such a strong commitment (as Lance suggested) but if you’re paying someone then you can. Unfortunately I don’t think that it would be financially possible based on the cost for playing without refs last season.
I enjoy refereeing and I did as many as I could, but I think we need more people to step up, because we all have other commitments. It always seemed to be the usual suspects. Perhaps we could organize a few training sessions for interested parties to try and get more volunteers. I would be happy to run a couple of sessions in this ‘off’ season to give pointers and advice.
Thoughts, feelings…?
OK, here are my thoughts.
1) If possible, start the season the first weekend after labor day, not the second. This year that would have the season start on Saturday, September 6. Keep 8 teams.
2) Increase rosters to 18 players.
3)
Moving on…
3) increase fee to $110.
4) This would give $1980 per team in revenue. This year’s revenue from dues was $1500 per team. This comes out to an extra $34 per team per game.
5) Pay referees $50 per game as per Richie’s pay scale.
6) Open referee opportunities to all who want them and go through some basic training. This should help anyone for whom the cost of playing is a burden. Of course, “the usual suspects” who have carried the league in the past should get some preference.
7) Try to finish season before Thanksgiving. Playing semifinals and finals on the same weekend is fine. The finalists have 9 months to recover.
Hopefully this can help with getting both players and refs to show up.
It seems that the number of games we play during the season increases every player’s risk of injury as well as diminishes performance on the field. I think every team had at least one week where they were scheduled to play three games or two weekend games in very hot tempertures. I rather see fewer games with solid performances than a bunch of games with players who are sore or ineffective.
Increasing the squads to 17 or 18 players, I do not believe to be necessary. I think the low turn out will happen regardless, unless we decrease the number of games.
As far as refs, it would be nice to have someone that is unbiased as well as not coming or going to a game of their own that day. Raising the price again makes me want to vomit. What if we had a huge garage sale at the end of summer or brainstorm of a way to make money rather than spend it?
