The Stunning Burritos Upset The Racers 2-0
After sneaking in to the playoffs by putting a string of wins together, the burritos came up with a huge win against the always strong Race St. Café. Due to circumstances beyond my control I couldn’t make it until 20 minutes in to the game – I was mightily relieved to find out that despite only having nine players to that point, the score was still nil-nil. It was a good, tight, and competitive game with both sides playing some nice football.
After about 30 minutes the deadlock was broken by the first line of defence – i.e. the forwards pressuring the opposition defenders. TO provided his trademark hustle (I think the new haircut made him streamlined) and with Karim making like a Wonderbra and providing uplifting support, a neat one-two was played and TO took the ball away from the last man and on to his weaker left foot to blast a rasping, lifting drive in to the top corner that even Mike had no chance at saving. The goal, quite naturally, stung the racers in to action but it (the goal) also gave the burritos a boost of confidence, and Karim was denied what looked like a sure fire goal after he was played in one-on-one with the keeper after some terrific approach play opened the Race St. defence like Britney Spears’ legs – Mike was just as exposed as her punany but he made the save of the season by rushing out and throwing himself at Karim’s feet, with perfect timing. In to the break one nil up, all the momentum seemed to be with the burritos.
Predictably, the Racers, with Conrad in typically robust and committed mode, came out of the traps snarling and fighting for the equalizer – unfortunately Edward Woodward was nowhere to be found, but another Limey was. Your humble reporter had to make a diving stop, scrambling desperately to recover the ball as it was trickling toward the line after the Italian man-mountain that is Vincenzo had worked himself into a nice position in the six yard box, hitting a cross first time low and hard. If that had gone in it would have been a very different ball game and from that point both sides seemed to raise their game a little. There was an edge to the game as time went on and Ricky did a nice job keeping control.
That man flkying Mike in the Race Street goal made spectacular save after spectacular save to keep his team in the game, and the crossbar came to his rescue on a free kick taken by crazy legs Alex that curved beautifully around and over the wall. The nail was placed in the coffin appropriately enogh by Karim, who seems to have a twin, because he is absolutely everywhere on the pitch. I’m not sure who it was (maybe Xena?) that knocked in a cross field ball from the left wing but it was a beauty. With Mike moving across the face of his goal, all his weight was on the wrong foot and he was only able to watch as Karim floated a perfectly weighted header, looping in to the roof of the net.
The Racers pressured desperately for the last twenty minutes, and with Xavi becoming even more injured it was painful just to watch him hobbling and limping around, trying manfully to mark men and make tackles. He was an inspiration to all his teammates, with that gutsy, selfless display. That guy symbolized our whole season – no matter what happened, and no matter what odds were placed against us we kept on battling. We managed to hold on and survive wave after wave of attacks with a combination of desperate clearances and skilful, committed tackling.
Thanks to the Racers for a great game and a huge thanks to the guy who reffed the first half, and a bigger thanks to Ricky for stepping in to ref the second half. It got heated at times but Ricky kept his cool and even managed to contain Zack and Conrad!

Oh dear - it looks like I’m going to have to be less relevant with my pop culture references.
In the other Quarterfinal:
Vesuvio sneaks past Fergies
In a real nail biter, Vesuvio got past Fergies last night at Sacks Field. The game was real close - for the first minute. And then Vesuvio took control. Playing 3 men down, Fergies seemed to have no shot and that proved to be true when Dave Petit scored twice within the first 5 minutes. Fergies however would not go quietly. And managed a chance or two in the first half. However, by the time the half whistle came, Vesuvio had a 6-nil lead, or maybe it was 7 or 8. Greg P. scored a few, Brian i think added one…alot of the Calamaris got in on the action.
At half it was agreed that Vesuvio would get the win and advance, and we played a 20 minute pickup, so the night wasn’t a complete loss.
Last night also marked the return of Big Ben who returned from injury. Nice to see you out there. He also almost got his name in the book with a long range shot that just missed. He may have been looking at the second crossbar.
Good luck to Vesuvio and all the remaining teams.
Until next season…

That’s a real shame. The competition seems to have been taken out of a lot of games this season, and it’s especially disheartening that a playoff game should be rendered meaningless.
I feel for you, Fergies, but I salute your effort in giving it a go anyway.

In fact, I’m sure it was Xavi who scored the second goal. Am i wrong?
Rich,
We actually tried the reschedule the game since we thought we were going to be short handed as well. Fergies sent an email to us and the board saying that they wanted to go ahead with the Tuesday game rather than a Thursday or Saturday game.
I just wanted to mention that we had no problem rescheduling since advancing on a game like that was rather unsatisfying. Just so it’s not portrayed that we played them short handed on purpose.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure goal #2 was brought to you by Xavi.
Cheers to El Fuego. You guys really brought it last night. Good luck to all continuing in the playoffs.

or in an act of bad sportsmanship….
Sorry Xavi - you are even more so my hero. It’s hard to see who’s who from way back in goal.
Thanks for the corrections, y’all.
Vesuvio cheated and made us play last night shorthanded!
No, actually we had expected 9 but unfortunately had two late dropouts and Thursdays numbers would have been much of the same - 7/8. We could have pushed it back a couple of weeks, then we would have had a full squad.
Our numbers have been diminishing for a few weeks due to injuries and work schedules. Just bad timing.
I never meant to insinuate anything like bad sportsmanship or any kind of ill feeling. It’s just a shame that injuries and unavailability were the deciding factors, and not the skill or commitment of the players.
That’s life!
