Vesuvio beat Fergies 5-2.
Vesuvio is back with one title under its belt, and looking for more. Fergies, a newly formed team, presented a tadpole like first victim to the Shark-like Calamaris . It was not all bad though. Vesuvio’s strong midfield presents a tough scenario for every team in this league. I cant remember who scored (since I have not heard from captains), but some things were obvious. Vesuvio opened strong, and Fergies had to scramble up the learning curve… and they tried. The 2 goals that Fergies were able to score does not only expose a vital weakness in the Vesuvio back, but it also shows that pubbers can put together some good plays. For the first time playing together, they were at a disadvantage to the Calamaris. They should not, however, be ruled out as tough contenders. Vesuvio are easily amongst the favorites to win this year.
Race St. and Bonte Equal at 1-1.
Yes, this was a battle between the Waffles and the Giants (most race st players are 7 feet tall). A heated battle that ended in a 1-1 draw. The first goal came from Bonte by Big Kev from a remarkable slide to knock one past Mike. Calls for offside were plenty, but the linesman seemed right in position. The equalizer was ironically from Bonte frequenter and true waffle addict, Alan. It came from a corner, and the 6 1/2 foot giant was uncontested, and headed it in from close range. Mike Gibbons was easily the hero of the night displaying an array of fantastic dives to keep out 8 waffle shots on goal. Look for both teams to get better as they get to know their new teams.
Via Bicycle is destroyed by Patriot missiles
5-0. The Patriots are a solid team, and are most likely the best team in the league. They have an array of talent from the goal to their strikers, and getting lucky with the new late choice brit Mr. Holt and late assignment Slim just adds to their strength. Ironically, these two chaps were responsible for 4 of the 5 goals. They play excellent ground passes, and build an attack from well before the half way line. So who will be able to stop the patriots?
But let’s talk about Via for a sec. This is a team that had not played together much, did not have any formation, and seemed to complain about the “poor selection” of their talent from the draft. Furthermore, they get 3 injuries yesterday, 2 of which are significant players - Juan and Diego. To cap it all, their goalie is MIA, and they use Diego to fill in… granted, he did not let in any goal. The team needs to get together, create a formation around their core talents justin, alex, ricky, diego, and get their goalie back. One could see a glimpse of their potential when the Alex and Ricky broke the Patriot defense a couple of times, but were unfortunate to hit the post once. But the others must step up and find their calling… and must not timidly watch as their team get’s scored on. Organization, strategy, and teamwork is key. Either they stop complaining and practise to play well, or it’s all-you-can-eat for every other team that plays Via.
Of note, I wonder what one thinks of this: After going 5 - 0 up, the Patriot’s striker Paul (baldy), faked an obvious dive in the already beaten Via Bicycle penalty box in an effort to get a penalty. Perhaps there may be justification if one would benefit monetarily, or even if the score was tie, or if one were losing. Beyond the obvious sadness of diving that is shamed upon the world over, it is truly baffling that one would do this when up 5 goals to none, and in a social league where you may well be looked down upon as a … It is a good thing that Ricky the ref spotted the pathetic act, although a yellow card should have ensued. That may be the only tarnish of an otherwise superb Patriot team.
OVERALL: A fantastic first day of football with beautiful weather, and overall great sportsmanship. See y’all later!
