Patriots Edge Out Bonte 2-1

Published by BVFC at 6:20 am under Latest Scores, Results

As I mentioned before, the Patriots are the best team in the league. The have solid players from back to front. The game was closer that you would think though. Bonte began with a shot at goal in the first 10 seconds that was tipped onto the crossbar by Max. Eventually, the first goal came from a counter attack.. Ricky to Adel up the right side, who shot the ball low to the far post in a clinical finish giving the waffles a 1-0 lead. The waffles were not up for long. A corner from Patriot striker Jimmy was punched out only to be deftly placed by Loren. It was 1-1 at the half.

The second half was more of the same, with some solid defending an passing by both teams. A dangerous play due to a high boot led to a free kick for the patriots in their half. The ball took a good bounce over the waffle goalie, who was blinded by the thursday night lights. After some contemplation, the referee intended an indirect freekick (dangerous play verses a blatant foul), but awarded a goal. Chris, the Patriot Captain, in typical fairness and benevolence, calmly agreed to a replay of the freekick. Even though the second time, it did not result in a goal, a few minutes later, Chris was handsomely rewarded by an assist. Attacking the right wing, Chris had Bula and Heri commit as he lofted a pin point cross into the waffle penalty area onto the head of Mr. Holt who guided it above Fabio into the net. Both teams had one other chance to score… but remarkable saves by Max and Fabio goalies denied solid shots by Ricky and Jimmy. This was a tough game that the Patriots won 2-1.

“Patriots are solid. They have fast, skilled players. And they are good sportsmen. Chris and his boys deserved the win yesterday, but we look forward to an epic battle the next time around.” - Bula.

Diego did an awesome job refereeing, and Conrad as the linesman.

There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding when a free kick is direct or indirect. Without having an existential, philosophical discussion here are some general guides.

For all ‘penal’ fouls, i.e. kicking, tripping, pulling a shirt, holding someone, spitting, foul and abusive language, refusing to back up ten yards at a free kick, unsportsmanlike behavior, barging in to them when challenging for a header, etc. it is a DIRECT free kick.

Handball also falls under this category, HOWEVER, the definition of handball is that the opponent moves the hand/arm towards the ball with intent - sticking you hands up to protect your face or your privates does NOT count - even in the 18 yard area! In the case of an ‘accidental’ handball, where the transgressor’s team gains an unfair advantage, I was always instructed to give an INDIRECT free kick under the auspices of ‘obstruction’. Which leads us to when to award an INDIRECT free kick. Here goes…

When, in the opinion of the ref, a player:

    # Impedes the progression of an opponent (obstruction)

    # Plays in a dangerous manner (i.e. feet too high, or a player placing their head low near someone’s feet, playing the ball when you are sitting on the ground and an opponent is challenging for the ball, etc.)

    # Prevents, or attempts to prevent the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands

Or when a keeper, inside their own penalty area:

    # Holds on to the ball for more than six seconds (Dave Petit take note !)

    # Handles a back pass

    # Handles the ball after receiving it from a team-mate direct from a throw-in

    # Touches the ball again with their hands, before it is touched by another player, after releasing it from their possession

    Okay ?

Technically, if an indirect free kick goes straight in to the opponent’s goal without being touched by another player (of either team) a goal kick is awarded, but in this league I see nothing wrong with what you guys did after a clarification was needed.

Please, everybody feel free to ask me questions about the laws of the game. I will be happy to try and clarify. Hey Bula, maybe we could have a section just for ‘Ask the Ref’ type questions.

If you want to ask me something directly please email me richard@apeel.net

I have a ton of ‘Ask the Ref’ type questions during games

But they are rarely ever appropriate!

Ah Dave, the fine line between “ask the ref” and “bitch at the ref” . . . it gets us all sometimes.

Bula… I can not ref tomorrow. I was just informed that I need to work.
    Very, very sorry about that.
